If you count yourself like most food loving New Yorkers who consider themselves aficandos of Food and Art, you’ll want to check out this year’s Umami Festival bustling with lots of fab happenings from films series, food events, and with a special, live addition of The Food Seen on Heritage Network Radio hosted by Michael Harlan Turkell, food writer and photographer. A unique, recently published book and CD project presents recipes by top chefs scored by Brooklyn based, indie rock band, One Ring Zero.  Lead by composer Michael Hearst, the band experimented with a variety of musical styles according to each chef’s vision. The lyrics were contributed by Mario Batali, Tom Collicio, and David Chang, among others.

In the spirit of the project, this event brings together live music, delicious food and drinks, and some personal reflections on both. This final component will be presented by food writer and photographer Michael Harlan Turkell, hosting a special addition of his talk show The Food Seen on Heritage Network Radio from Roulette.

Looking for more interesting foodie venues the Experimental Cuisine Collective takes place on Monday, April 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at LightHouse Restaurant in Brooklyn: 145 Borinquen Place (corner of Keap). In their presentation, “Elemental: Shaping our Process for Culinary Evolution,” Robert Truitt (executive pastry chef of Altamarea Group) and Brian Sullivan (Ai Fiori) will walk the audience through their creative process by examining design-related theory, cognitive understanding as it pertains to the culinary world, and the influence on the creative process that business occasionally supersedes. Attendees will not only get a visual sense for some of their past works, but also a demonstration incorporating some of the processes and theories that guide their work.

Paradise Returns In The Bronx

The No Longer Empty crew strikes again with their latest major project, This Side of Paradise opened on April 4, 2012—what’s behind the gates of the Andrew Freedman Home will clearly make the Bronx’s a hotbed of artistic endeavors and much needed cultural destination. The NLE curators transformed the interior space with the works of  select visual artists addresses site specific work that respond to such issues as memory, immigration, storytelling, aging and the creation of fantasy informed by the original concept of the Home “being poor in style” suggests. This Side of Paradise celebrates human ingenuity, the strength of the human spirit and the resilience needed to fashion beauty, hope and rejoicing. This show features over 35 artists of which include Linda Cummingham, Justen Ladda Sofia Maldonado, and Federico Uribe, you still have time to hang out at the Andrew Freedman Home work the show runs through 05 June, 2012. This installation takes place at The Andrew Freeman Home once  a haven, paradise, for the rich elderly who had lost their fortunes. Bequeathed by millionaire Andrew Freedman, the Home provided not only food and shelter but all the accoutrements of a rich and civilized life style – white glove dinner service, a grand ball room, a wood-paneled library, billiard room and a social committee who organized concerts, opera performances and the like.

Referencing this quixotic history, This Side of Paradise references the past and reconnect the vision of Andrew Freedman to today’s Bronx and its realities. The exhibition and its extensive public programming onsite and offsite draws together the economic and social history of the Home with the present day realities of the Bronx and its residents.

THE FINN JUHL CHAMBER IN THE UN HEADQUARTER: Celebrates 100-year anniversary of Design design icon Finn Juhl starting 27 January rediscovery the UN Headquarters latest renovations. This major efforts is being overseen by Kasper Salto and Thomas Sigsgaard the winners of the Danish Arts Foundation’s competition to provide new furniture for the UN headquarters in New York. The Chamber was originally designed and furnished by the Danish architect Finn Juhl and is currently undergoing renovations which will be completed in 2013.

 

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk: The first exhibition devoted to the designs of world-renowned French couturier Jean Paul Gaultier will make its U.S. debut at the Dallas Museum of Art in November 2011. This is an unprecedented look at the designer dubbed fashion’s “enfant terrible” from the time of his first runway shows in the 1970s and who has become one of the most important fashion designers of recent decades. Organized by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with the Maison Jean Paul Gaultier, the exhibition premiered in Montreal on June 15, 2011, and will be on view at the Dallas Museum of Art from November 13, 2011, through February 12, 2012, before traveling to its final stop in the U.S. at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, de Young, in March 2012. The exhibition will be on view at the Fundación Mapfre – Instituto de Cultura in Madrid, Spain, from September 26 through November 18, 2012, and to Kunsthal Rotterdam, the Netherlands, from February 9, 2013 through May 12, 2013, and then travel to Arkitekturmuseet, Stockholm in June 2013.

Masterful Chef Ferran Adriá Flips the Switch and Caters to a Mass Market

Ferran Adriá gastronimic bubbles has burst,  and El Bulli his world class restaurant is turning into a research foundation that will reach out to the masses via daily internet postings. Stay tune for more fab food creations from the world’s number 1 chef.

The world’s greatest chef has had enough. “I don’t care now whether I have three stars, or however many. Or whether I am No 1 or No 28,” explains Ferran Adrià, the former plate-washer who has revolutionised high cuisine over the past 20 years.

“You can’t stay at number one forever. Imagine if Barcelona won the Champions League for 15 seasons,” he adds. “The system couldn’t handle it.”

Adrià’s words may sound world-weary, but in fact they are the opposite. Having reached the top, and stayed there for so long, he is closing his world-famous El Bulli restaurant and turning its location, in a charming Mediterranean cove, into a research foundation that will reach out to the masses by publishing daily on the internet.
